The 5 Mistakes I Made While Growing My LinkedIn Audience: Lessons and Insights

I've been on this journey of growing an audience on LinkedIn for the past year and half, and let me tell you, it's been quite a ride. In the spirit of sharing and helping each other out, I thought I'd get real about some mistakes I made along the way. Maybe you can dodge these pitfalls as you build your own presence.

1. Casting Too Wide a Net with My Content

When I first dived into the world of LinkedIn, my approach to content was like throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. I talked about everything under the sun related to social media. It took me a while to figure out my niche, which is totally okay. But looking back, I wish I'd done a bit more homework upfront to find my sweet spot in specific topical content. Lesson learned: niche down sooner rather than later.

2. Losing Touch with the Power of New Connections

Here's a trap I fell into: getting so wrapped up in the hustle that I forgot the importance of making new connections. Just recently, I had a great chat with Tom Berry, which made me realize it's been ages since I've genuinely connected with someone new here. Building relationships is key, folks. Don't make the same mistake of letting this slide!

3. Underestimating the Value of Copywriting Skills

In the rush to get clients and grow my business, I overlooked one crucial skill: copywriting. I learned it on the fly, but in hindsight, investing time in understanding the fundamentals from the get-go would have been a game-changer. If you're starting out, don't skimp on honing this skill. It's a game-changer for effective communication.

4. Slacking on Engagement After Gaining Traction

We all crave that moment when our efforts start to pay off, right? Well, here's where I stumbled: I began taking my growing community for granted. Big no-no. Building a great community is all about giving more than you receive. Keep engaging, keep giving - that's the secret sauce to maintaining a vibrant community.

5. Focusing More on Tasks Than on Results

About six months ago, I hit a snag. I got so bogged down in just ticking tasks off my list that I lost sight of my actual goals. I watched others around me skyrocket while I plateaued. It was a wake-up call. It's not just about getting things done; it's about channeling your creativity to achieve impactful results.

So, there you have it - my confession session! Each of these mistakes taught me something valuable. And the best part? You get to learn from them without having to make them yourself.

Remember, it's all part of the journey. You're going to stumble, and that's okay. The key is to keep learning, keep growing, and don't be too hard on yourself.
